Following is a excerpt from the Civil War Book Review, Jennifer Oast, Associate Professor of History at Bloomsburg University, for Black Cowboys in the American West: on the Range, On the Stage, Behind the Badge, a recently published book from the University of Oklahoma Press, for which I contributed an essay about Mary Fields titled "Mary Fields's Road to Freedom".
...That last section, “Outriders of the Black Cowboys,” is devoted to the experiences of African Americans in the West who were not cowboys but lived on the fringes of cattle country. Therefore, these essays return to the individuals who lived in the second half of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most compelling essay in the entire book is Miantae Metcalf McConnell’s “Mary Field’s Road to Freedom.” Fields, who settled in Montana in the 1880s, was the first African American woman hired as a star route mail carrier by the United States Postal Service – but she accomplished so much more. She moved to Montana to help establish a Catholic mission school in the wilderness, carrying out all the manual labor jobs for years with no pay besides room and board to aid her friends among the Ursuline nuns. Then, with little warning or justification, the first Catholic bishop of Montana demanded that she leave the service of the school. She then became the only black resident of Cascade, where she opened a café and laundry service. In her sixties, she applied for and received her Post Office commission to carry the mail long distance over rough, unsettled terrain, and she continued in that position for eight years, carrying that mail incredible distances – once traveling 34 miles on snowshoes to get the mail through! This is an excellent analysis of a woman’s life of service and accomplishment despite awful limitations based on her gender and race.
I've been considering expanding on this chapter and publishing as a book. It would make a good complement to Deliverance Mary Fields, I think, as an expository overview of her life story.
What do you think? Would you have any interest in such a book? I value your opinions and would like to get your feedback.
A couple months ago my granddaughter needed a new diary. She is a prolific writer and fills up journals quickly. She needed a new one and I searched on Amazon for one to send to her.
I couldn't find any nice looking ones (plain, without writing prompts) for less than $12 - $20 and up. I was surprised. They were either really tacky or really expensive. So I bought her a beautiful hardcover journal and set out to fill the empty niche I had discovered.
Hence, the "A Journal of Mine" series. 110 pages 6:2 lined- blank pages to stimulate drawing or doodles as well as words - easily fits in bag, backpack or purse and colorful, abstract and/or fun, cover images - all for $6.99 !
I am contacting each of you who signed up for "news, advance copies and discounts" to offer a free journal of choice from the series.
Thank you for your comments and reviews and patience! So sorry I have not done a good job blogging and sending news recently.

In honor of Martin Luther King and all of the brilliant and courageous black Americans who have helped to shape the character and strength of our nation, I sponsored a free Deliverance Mary Fields ebook day on Sunday, January 15th, via Bookbub and several other promotional ebook sites.
The response was incredible. I am moved, not only because it gives me hope that there are many readers interested in American history, but also black American history. Hope that somehow, each of us can , by personal behavior, change the persistent presence of unjust racial prejudice and the attitudes and beliefs that create and perpetuate them. It's abhorrent that discrimination and hatred based on the color of skin and ethnic origin continue to exist. In twenty-four hours, eight thousand, six-hundred and ninety-seven Deliverance Mary Fields ebook downloads occurred. Huzzah! If any of you are reading this, thank you, and I hope you enjoy the book.
